Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

It was difficult for me to locate local organizations or communities of practice (CoP) which appealed to me.  However, it was easier for me to locate state organizations or communities of practice.  The organizations / communities of practice that I found were the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, and Advocates for Children and Youth.

These organizations appealed to me because they are in the state in which I teach in, promote meaningful educational opportunities and experiences, promote and improve programs and policies, and support Maryland’s children and families to live a life free of discrimination.

Currently, Advocates for Children and Youth does not have any job opportunities available at this time.  I could not locate any available job openings with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform. The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland has two job openings at this time.  The current positions are a Development Associate and Public Policy Associate. However, neither these jobs appeal to me.

  1. Crystal,
Do you feel like it will be detrimental to you because Maryland does not have any local agencies you can identify? Keep reaching out and I am sure you will find an appropriate source! I hope you will find a job in the future that appeals to you!

  2. Hi Crystal,

I also had a hard time finding local organizations and chose state organizations to research. I've considered forming a group of my own, but that will have to wait until I graduate! Good luck with the course!

    1. Angela,

Good luck with forming your own group. Keep in touch. I would love to be a part of your CoP.

  3. Hi Crystal,

I was able to find job opportunities for two of the organizations that I researched. Zero to three is in the Washington DC area. However, Military Child Education Coalition had the jobs in which I was most interested and there were opportunities on several installations with the exception of Fort Belvoir. That is typically how my luck goes.

As Deb stated, I hope that you are able to find a position in which you are interested.

Wouldn't you agree that this assignment is getting us in the habit of looking for job opportunities in which we are able to make a change. For once in my life, I would like a job where work fills more like enjoyment. When doing what you enjoy, you never feel like you are working.

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

  4. Crystal,
I found that most of the organizations I researched only had membership positions. However, I was able to find job opportunities through internet searches. I also included the PTA as a community of practice at the local level. These are voluntary positions; however, the PTA is very important in education.

I understand why it would be hard to find job that would appeal to us within the early childhood field due to the funding cut within federal programs.
